1. Cleansing

A clean foundation is the best start to all skincare routines, and men are no exception. skin needs to be cleansed every morning and night with a product that contains active ingredients which will pull double duty. Vitamin C, glycolic acid, green tea, grape seed extract, salicylic acid — all of these ingredients offer the have a multitude of benefits for the skin when included in a cleanser, such as: anti-aging, diminishing fine lines and wrinkles, protection from free-radical and environmental damage, exfoliation and a reduction in blemishes or breakouts. To keep time spent prepping to a minimum and reduce time spent primping, use cleanser in the shower when the skin is already wet and application will be a snap. Simply massage a small amount of product over the face and neck, avoiding the eyes and rinse carefully. Pat dry and follow with moisturizer.

2. Exfoliation

Regular exfoliation of the skin will do more than just keep the skin soft and supple, it will also encourage new cell growth, minimize fine lines and wrinkles and increase the efficacy of all other treatment products. With dozens of different formulations and products, exfoliators are a far cry from the sandpapery versions of the past that were hard to use and damaged the skin. In their place are sophisticated, yet simple concoctions featuring vitamins, minerals, herbs and plant extracts, all designed to soften and smooth without damaging the top layer of skin.

3. Final Touches

After cleansing, treat skin to an anti-aging moisturizer with high levels of wrinkle-fighting and skin smoothing ingredients. Just because men’s skin is thicker and tends to be coarser than a woman’s doesn’t mean it also won’t benefit from some TLC. Fact is, environmental damage, free radicals and pollution do not discriminate and everyone is an easy target to these villains, including men. Pump up the skin’s ability to fight back with a skin-specific cocktail of anti-oxidants, vitamins and minerals.

For a dryer skin, use formulations that include vitamin C, shea butter or olive oil. For men blessed with more normal skin, not too dry or too oily, the sky is the limit! Numerous products are available that will not only keep the skin hydrated and healthy, but minimize the signs of aging, as well. Finally, the number one skincare product that should be in every guy’s hand? Sunblock. Sunblock is a year-round necessity to help ward off environmental damage and prevent fine lines and wrinkles and, can often be used in place of a moisturizer.

The shelves are lined from floor to ceiling with all kinds of lotions, creams and serums. How does one know how to pick? Not surprisingly lotions and creams have much in common. Both contain humectants to add moisture and hydration as well as emollients to help seal in moisture and protect your skin. One of the biggest distinctions between lotions and creams, however, is thickness. Serums are applied to skin before you put on your lotion or cream as part of your daily routine. They prepare skin and allow the cream or lotion to be absorbed into deeper layers of the skin. Without serum, thick creams may not penetrate deep enough to provide maximum effectiveness. Knowing what to purchase is as simple as understanding how much moisture is needed for a particular skin type.
